The Moto 360 smartwatch is back... well, sort of

Image
Motorola backed out of the smart watch market way back in 2016, after releasing two versions of its Moto 360 smartwatch, the first all-touchscreen smartwatch with a round display. At the time, the company indicated there just wasn’t enough interest in wearable devices for the company to continue investing in the category. Fast forward three years and the Moto 360 smartwatch has returned, though not in the way you might expect. The new Moto 360 is made by a company called eBuyNow , which describes itself as “an independent, data-driven consumer electronics company” that “work[s] with proprietary tools to identify precise gaps in the consumer electronics industry, and then proceed to build, market, and distribute promising consumer... Venmo’s debit card now gives you 5 percent cash back at Target, Sephora, and Wendy’s

Image
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Venmo announced today that it’s launching Venmo Rewards, a rewards program for its physical Venmo debit card . The program will give you automatic cash back at certain retailers if you pay with the Venmo card. Venmo says that the Venmo card will initially earn you 5 percent cash back at Target, Sephora, and Wendy’s, and 4 percent cash back at Dunkin’. However, these are “limited-time offers” — though Venmo tells us that new offers will be added on an ongoing basis (and you can see where there are deals by using the app). But if you don’t buy from one of the places where there’s an offer, you won’t get cash back. Toothbrush startup Quip is launching a $20 floss dispenser

Image
quip Quip , the electric toothbrush subscription service, is launching its second product today: a floss dispenser called Floss. The metallic dispenser will sell for $20 and refillable floss canisters, which are automatically delivered every three months, will sell for $5 each. The floss is pre-marked in green every 18 inches, the “dentist recommended amount to give each tooth its own section”. At first glance of the photos, I thought the tube was meant to go into your mouth, like one of those floss picks that come in packs of 100. But that’s not what this is at all. All the weighty applicator does is house the refillable tube of floss, which emerges when you click the tube like a ballpoint pen. The amount of floss is tiny in comparison to... Continue reading…

Amazon Fresh is now free for Prime members

Image
Photo by Smith Collection/Gado/Getty Images Starting today, Amazon will no longer charge a $14.99 monthly fee for Amazon Fresh on top of your Prime subscription. Now, if you already pay $12.99 a month (or $119 a year) for Prime, you’ll also be able to get Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market grocery deliveries free of charge. Existing Fresh subscribers can benefit from the new pricing immediately, while new customers will have to register their interest and wait for an invite. Vox notes that your order will need to be of a certain size before Amazon will allow it to be delivered for free. In most places the minimum order amount is $35, but in New York City it rises to $50. Amazon Fresh is currently available in over 2,000 cities across the US. Amazon Fresh is just one of the... Continue reading…

Buying Fitbit won’t help Google overcome Apple’s biggest smartwatch advantage

Image
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Google is reportedly looking to buy Fitbit as a way to bolster its wearables strategy. Trying to suss out what this could mean for Google, its Wear OS platform, and Fitbit’s customers is (pardon the fitness pun) exhausting . Here’s where I landed: Assuming it bears out, I think that this acquisition portends a wearables reboot instead of shoring up Google’s current smartwatch strategy. I think that mainly because Google’s current smartwatch strategy isn’t helped by Fitbit — at all. Unless Google has completely lost the thread, this acquisition only makes sense if the company is ready to try something completely different. It certainly should be. Let’s just recap how poorly things are going for Wear OS. Google’s most prolific partner in... Continue reading…

Facebook’s embrace of Breitbart doesn’t add up

Image
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales If you missed the first-ever Interface Live last week, I hope you’ll consider come seeing me this week! I’ll be talking with Clara Tsao, a researcher and entrepreneur who focuses on disinformation and platforms, at a free event in San Francisco. It’s on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., and I would love to see you there. The event is free, and you can RSVP here . When I think about my ideal relationship between Facebook and journalism, something I have been doing more or less since 2016 , it has always involved carriage fees: payments from Facebook to publishers to support their journalism, in exchange for the right to run it freely across all of their product surfaces. As I told Columbia Journalism Review this summer : Just as cable companies pay for... Continue reading…

WhatsApp fixes the notification badge on muted iOS chats

Image
Photo by Thomas Ricker / The Verge WhatsApp’s latest iOS update stops showing an unread notification badge on its app icon for messages you’ve muted. It’s a minor but welcome change that arrived with version 2.19.110 of the iOS app . The change applies for both individual and group chats. The messaging app’s mute feature is invaluable if you want to reduce distractions, particularly if you’re a participant in any large group chats. Before the update, muting a chat would only stop your phone from vibrating and playing a notification sound when it received a new message, while doing nothing about the anxiety-inducing red notification badge placed on the app’s icon on the home screen. The new update only affects iOS users. On Android, meanwhile, WhatsApp has a separate “Show... Continue reading…
